Take the direct ScotRail or LNER train from Edinburgh Waverley. A typical run to Stirling takes about 50 minutes and the quickest 42, there is no change, and on the weekday timetable we checked these trains left Waverley roughly every half hour from 05:18 until 22:35. With 42 Stirling departures across the day, you can more or less turn up at Waverley and take the next one.
The half-hourly pattern has some bunching in it. In several hours a third Stirling train joins the usual two, so the 08:34 is followed by the 08:38, the 10:33 by the 10:37 and the 13:32 by the 13:37, and after a pair like that the next departure for Stirling can be the best part of half an hour away. The train the planner showed made three stops between Waverley and Stirling.
The 16:33 and 16:38 are another close pair, five minutes apart. At the other end of the day, the 22:35 is the last direct Stirling train on the weekday list, so an evening in Edinburgh needs to wind up in time for it.
The journey planner also turned up Edinburgh–Stirling trains with a change at Croy, leaving Waverley at 06:00 and 06:45 and then at a quarter past each hour from 07:15 to 21:15, taking about 69 minutes. Eight more went by way of Glasgow Queen Street and took around 84 minutes. On the move the direct train is roughly 19 minutes faster than the Croy route, so Croy only earns its place when it leaves Waverley well ahead of the next direct Stirling departure.
Stirling station is about 425 metres from King Street, a walk of around seven minutes, which puts the middle of town within ten minutes of stepping off the Edinburgh train.
